Steve Jobs 1955 – 2011

Could not believe myself as I woke up this morning and wanted to check out the Apple website. My idol, Steve Jobs has died at the age of 56. The page was black and white and Apple has removed all the links that usually show up at the bottom.

To me, Steve has not only been a visionary and a creative genius. He’s changed the lives of so many around the world and of course mine too. He has brightened my world for the past 24 years since my dad bought us our first ever Macintosh back in 1987.

This morning, the first whatsapp message regarding Steve’s death came through to me at 9 this morning, my friend said, ‘you’re late‘ then added ‘you should have sent email to steve‘. My response was, ‘I know‘. Truly, I have been thinking of emailing Steve on numerous occasions, but regretfully, I have never done so.

I really want to pay my tributes to this unique man so I decided that I’ll buy some flowers and bring them to Apple Store ifc. Got there around 3 in the afternoon and there were already some flowers laid in front of the store when I got there with my brother. So I put mine down too.

While I was there, I noticed that there were other fellow twitterers there too. So I met up with @_wli at Starbucks just next door. He told me that there will be some sort of memorial for Steve later at 7 in the evening. So I decided to stay for that too.

Hung out with my brother in Central till 6ish then he left. I went back to Apple Store ifc and since people are starting to get off work, a big crowd was gathering in front of the store, including the press.

At around 7, fans started sticking Post-it notes onto the wall outside the store creating the iMemorialWall for Steve. Here’s mine.

At one point, @hypercasey went up the stairs and posed this as his tribute to Steve and caught the attention of everyone. Yes, everyone.

I stayed there till 8 and here’s the iMemorialWall, the flowers and other tributes to Steve just before I left.

I guess this is the least I can do for Steve Jobs. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the world. Your innovations, speeches, quotes and positive attitude will be remembered forever. Rest in peace.

New iPhone 4 TV Ads

“If you don’t have an iPhone, well, you don’t have an iPhone.”

Apple rolled out a series of 3 new TV ads today and that’s the message. Telling audiences what they’re missing out if they don’t have an iPhone.

The 3 ads focused on the App Store, the iPod + iTunes and iBooks + iBookstore. Have a look for yourself.

Haha… Very teasing huh? What do you think?

Apple’s iPhone 4 Press Conference

It’s been a tough week for Apple Inc., under fire over its iPhone 4 antenna issue. It’s been heavily reported that when you hold the phone in a certain way, its reception would drop dramatically.

Apple has been trying to fix the issue with a software update, iOS 4.0.1 (available for update through iTunes already). But it seems like there are still questions to be answered. So just about an hour ago (starting at 10:00AM PT US time), Apple held a press conference regarding the iPhone 4.

At the very beginning, Apple showed this video clip from YouTube to the waiting press.

Steve Jobs took the stage to go through the following statistics before answering questions from the press. Here’s what he said.

  1. Apple says just 0.55% of iPhone owners have reported antenna problems
  2. Apple admits iPhone 4 drops more calls than iPhone 3GS
  3. Apple will give away free cases for every iPhone 4 through 30 September
  4. Apple says software fix for iPhone 4 proximity sensor is coming
  5. iPhone 4 will be available in 17 more countries on 30th July, omitting South Korea
  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Hong Kong
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

I’m not sure if the antenna issue will affect me when I get my iPhone 4, but the bumper looks nice and will protect its metal surrounding, so it might be a good idea to have one anyways.

I am quite happy with the press conference because I think that Apple has taken responsibility for the issue and are trying to resolve it. I don’t want to make any further judgement on the iPhone 4 before I get one, so… Hopefully, I can get one in the first batch of the Hong Kong delivery. More personal reviews then…

Apple has now posted the video of the press conference on their website.
