WTFARG?

To be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of soccer. But since it’s a once-every-4-years big thing, I might as well get myself hyped up about it and watch a few games. Tonight’s first game was ARG (Argentina) vs GER (Germany) and I was watching it at home with my dad and my brother.

Maybe because I’ve always liked the way the South Americans play soccer, especially with their very talented ball-controlling skills, I was an Argentina supporter tonight!

Oxfam Trailwalker 2009

Oxfam Trailwalker 2009, an annual charity event where teams of four are required to complete a 100km hike from Sai Kung to Yuen Long within 48 hours.

Gary, one of the four teammates, and I went to do some last minute shopping at this hiking shop the day before the event. We bought new socks, head lights, heaps of energy gel and power bars. Then we got back to the office, organised everything for our support teams to bring us during the event, then I went home. I got home quite early that night and went to bed much earlier than I normally do, ready for the big day!

After months’ of training, it’s finally the big day, Oxfam Trailwalker 2009! We got there in the morning, around 11:00, registered the team and started taking photos with other teams from the company.

There were so many people at the starting point, everyone were doing their stretches and warm ups. Everyone was very excited! People were counting down the final 10 seconds, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 GO~! Off we went! The first 2 sections were relatively easy and the scenery was beautiful. We enjoyed it so much!

It was already night time when we got to Check Point 2 (CP2) and our support team was already there waiting for us! Other teams of the company have already made it there hours before us. It was so tough for them to be waiting for us in the freezing cold weather! They brought us hot food and other supplies. We spent almost an hour there, then we started walking again.

By the time we got to the next support team check point, we were really behind. Teddy was starting to suffer from his knee injury and was already struggling at that point. We were all very worried about his condition.

It’s section 4 of the MacLehose Trail after this check point and we have never completely practised this section before. I’ve heard that it’s really long and it’s quite a tough one. Turns out, it was really long! My knee was starting to hurt as well and I couldn’t raise my left leg any higher than 6 cm. Teddy was really struggling to move forward and I stayed with him the whole time, just to make sure he’s okay. The sun was already up by the time we got to the next check point. Teddy was in so much pain and wasn’t able to go up or down stairs anymore. We consulted the physiotherapists there and he decided to drop out. After the physiotherapist told me that my pain was only caused because my muscles were too tensed, I was really relieved. Because I was thinking that I’ve injured my joint. Anyways, it was comforting to hear that I would be okay. But he said that he would be very surprised if I could make it anywhere near the finish line. That’s how bad my condition was at that stage.

Teddy left while the rest of us were having a short nap. It was so cold that although we’re lying in those folding beds, we could not fall asleep. We got up after trying to sleep for 45 minutes and started again. At that point, our support team arrived! They walked backwards from where they’ve parked the car to look for us. They’ve been waiting for hours! Our phones had no reception and they got really worried. Then we walked together and arrived at the next support team check point. Changed our clothes, had lunch (what was supposed to be our breakfast) and added supplies. Gary was also suffering from blisters on his feet and decided to leave with our support team. So from this point onwards, there’s only William and me left in the team.

Very soon, we got to check point 6. We asked our colleague Johnny to join us for a walk. We waited for him to arrive and I had another quick nap at the check point. I was really sleepy then. It was getting dark again as he arrived so we started again. Johnny took my back pack for the entire section 7. It was his first time hiking and we were so happy to have him with us. It made our walk so much easier, we had someone else to talk to and was carrying my back pack. Without him, I’m sure we couldn’t go much further. My left leg was really painful and I was slowing the team down big time. They had to constantly stop and wait for me. Every other step was just so painful!

We finally got to CP7, we quickly went over to the medical tent and asked for help. I started giving my left leg massages by myself. Johnny had to leave coz it was already getting really late. The officers offered him a lift back to the city! They were so nice! William and I spent almost an hour at that check point before we took off again. Because I have been massaging my left leg by myself, I couldn’t feel any pain for the first 15 minutes or so. Then it slowly started to hurt again. But we were very familiar with section 6, 7 & 8, so it didn’t take us very long to finish it. But William’s knee was hurting too bad. Towards the end of it, he had to sit of the stairs and use his arms to go down the stairs. After a long discussion, I decided to leave him and ran to the check point ahead to ask for help. I got to the check point then brought back a team of medical officers. They helped William to the check point and examined him. Our next support team weren’t there so I rang and he was still sleeping! So we had to wait! I had a Chinese massage there at the check point while waiting for our support team. That really helped! It was seriously freezing cold that morning! It was 03:30 when we got there and our support team finally arrived around 05:00. My hands were shaking and were spilling hot drinks all over my hand! Anyway, I had some food that the support team brought and discussed with William whether he will continue or not. He was really in pain and if he had continued, he couldn’t have made it within 48 hours. There’s only less than 6.5 hours to go before the 48 hours is up with 20+ km to go. So he decided to quit and I’m on my own for the remaining 20 km.

It was freezing cold and lonely. I started the last 20 km with another team but they had 1.5 hours more than I do. I had no choice but to leave them in order to catch up. I have not done section 9 & 10 before and was worried that I’ll get lost. But the organisers have done a very good job and made very clear signs throughout these 2 sections. I was walking really fast! At one point, I was doing 1 km in 13 minutes. When I got to the final 6 km, I knew I could make it! I was cheering for everyone that I pass, and they were cheering for me too! Everyone have had a tough hike for the past 2 days!

When I got to the final km, I saw some writings on the ground cheering for me! They were drawn by our support team! It was so nice! I was so happy to see those writings! Finsen was walking backwards from the finish line and was helping me take photos!

I finally did it in 47 hours and 2 minutes! So tired! Finsen and I went to the hall where they’re giving out the certificates and I was so relieved that the whole thing is finally over! Cecily twisted her ankle while supporting us and Gary took her to see a doctor, so they weren’t there when I crossed the finish line. They came back with William to celebrate with me just a few minutes afterwards.

Gary also bought me lunch from Yuen Long. So after my lunch, Finsen drove me home. Dad and my brother were there when I got home. They both thought that I was crazy, putting myself through this. But they were very proud of me! I quickly had a hot shower then collapsed.

I’d like to thank everyone who supported us, our support team, especially Cecily, Finsen, Carol, Nicole, Annie, Wally, Franky & Johnny! Also, everyone that volunteered at the event! You guys were great! Without your support, this event could have never happened and I could not have completed it! And of course, our sponsor, New Balance for sponsoring our company! It was a very tough experience! And I’m very proud of myself for completing the entire 100 km. Do it again next year? Well, we’ll see…

2nd Trailwalker Training – MacLehose Trail (Section 1 & 2)

It’s been a while since our last Trailwalker training and seems like we’re a bit slack with it. Anyhow, I woke up late that morning and Ryan had to wait for me for almost 45 minutes. I’m so sorry…

It’s definitely not the best weather for training. It was raining like hell when I was on my way out. We met up in Mongkok then immediately went over to Sai Kung to meet up with other colleagues.

Once we’ve got everyone, we started! The views were magnificent along Section 1, which circulates the reservoir. Here’s and overflow outlet and a tower.

At a point, we were overlooking the Water Sports Centre where I went for my sailing training. I wanted to take photos back then but since we were on the cab, we couldn’t. Now’s the time!

After another 10 minutes walk, we came up to this small sand island in the middle of the reservoir. The water was so clear that I cannot resist taking a photo of it.

Once we’ve passed this point, it started raining again. And it just got heavier and heavier. There were times when the rain was coming at us almost horizontally. We had to stop and rest for a bit and the moment the rain stopped, the view was again very nice.

There was a cab right in front of us at this point and to be honest, we were tempted to hop on. Anyway, we kept going.

Up the mountain we went and before we know, we arrived at Long Ke Beach. It’s such a beautiful sanctuary!

The rain just wouldn’t stop and the path were getting really muddy and slippery. I couldn’t have the camera in my hand anymore. But we came to another magnificent beach and I insist to take a photo with Ryan. We had to somehow hold the umbrella and protect the camera to take this shot!

Because I’ve been taking photos along the way, Ryan and I were so left behind that we’re on our own most of the time. Other colleagues couldn’t wait for us and had left by the time we’re still in the middle of no where.

After the walk, we had a quick lunch at Sai Kung then went straight home to sleep. Again, I slept throughout Saturday and Sunday to recover…

1st Trailwalker Training – MacLehose Trail (Section 7)

A charity walk of 100km from Sai Kung to Tuen Mun, nonstop. This is the first understanding of the Trailwalker to me. This event was somehow brought up in our fortnightly meetings with our colleagues. I went to a discussion group later that week and decided to join this event with 3 other close colleagues. It sounds as though it’s impossible to complete but we’re all willing to give it a try!

We went for our first ever training on the Saturday 20 June and we’re scheduled to walk Section 7 of the MacLehose Trail. We got there a little late for breakfast but had a really quick bite anyhow. Because otherwise we might be out of energy during the walk.

It was a very sunny day and we were all fairly excited about the walk. The first thing we noticed is that our gear wasn’t that right to begin with. Our backpacks were too heavily loaded and that we might not have enough water. Anyhow, we were already there so let’s start!

I have never walked the MacLehose Trail ever before and was really excited about it so I brought my camera with me! Lucky I did! Was not expecting such beautiful landscape and views in Hong Kong!

Up to this photo, we’re still pretty strong. Because it was only like 15 minutes of walk and it’s not even going uphill yet. But after taking this shot, we were in deep trouble! The uphill was so tough and there were moments were we’d rather be dead. We haven’t had these kind of training before and it’s been a while since we’ve exercised. After a long struggle, we finally managed to get to the mountain top! The views were magnificent!

After taking these photos, I put my camera down on the rocks and had a quick smoke hiding near the rocks. Suddenly a patrol jeep came by and I was worried about the smoking fine so we were kind of hiding and sneaking away at the same time. Meanwhile, my camera was still sitting on the rocks. And we started walking again. I’ve been taking photos of various signs along the way and we came up to this sign where I was hesitating whether I should take a picture of it or not. I didn’t bothered. It was such a long way down the hill and we were joyfully hopping our way down. After about 30 minutes of ‘hopping our way down’, we came to this check point where Section 7 ends and Section 8 starts. So I opened up my backpack and started looking for my camera. NOT THERE! THE CAMERA WAS NOT THERE!! HOLY SHIT!! I MUST HAVE LEFT IT ON THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN!! I did another thorough search and still no luck. Without hesitation, I started my way back up the steep mountain. I feel like I can die any minute as it was around 11:00 – 12:00 mid-day. The sun was not friendly at all. I soaked myself completed wet with a dripping towel beforehand and i was completely dried half way up. There were people coming from the opposite direction and I would ask if they saw a camera sitting around and have picked it up. No one saw it.

Gary, one of my teammates called me on my mobile as I took my last step up the mountain. I could barely talk but I managed to tell him that I’ll call back when I can talk. I was approaching the rocks where I’d left the camera. From a distance, I could see this black ‘thing’ on it. You cannot imagine how relieved I was when I picked up the camera in my hands again.

I’m so not going to leave anything around ever again! Especially on a walk like this! What a lesson to learn… T.T

I finally got back to where I left my teammates. It took me about an hour up and down again. Thank you so much for their support!

We’ve decided not to do Section 8 because it was our first training and it would be too hardcore for us beginners. So we headed towards the city (where we could take the mini-bus or taxi) which still takes another 2 hours to reach.

We got back into the city at around 15:00, found a restaurant, had a quick meal then I headed straight home to sleep. I got up around midnight and my teammates and friends asked me to go for a massage in Shenzhen. Of course I won’t say no! I was exhausted!!! Got changed then left home around 03:00. Spent the whole night at the massage place then had dinner with my family in Shenzhen the next day since it’s Father’s Day.

The 1st training was challenging enough already! Hope we’ll get better and walk longer each week.

A night of basketball

It’s been a while since I’ve played basketball with my mates! A mate of mine rang in the afternoon and ask if I’m interested. To be honest, since my injury from playing basketball the last time (probably 4 months back), I was a bit hesitated. But anyways, why not? It’d just be like a bunch of mates hanging out with a bit of sports! Yay!

Lucky I’ve got my gym gear with me, only thing missing is a pair of socks. So immediately after work, hopped into the Nike shop at Times Square and bought a pair. I was supposed to be there at Victoria Park at 20:00 but got there at 21:00. Made it there as quickly as I could.

I kept thinking to myself throughout the games that I have to be careful not to hurt my back again. So I was limiting my activeness all the way. Felt kind of bad because most of the points lost were from me. Oops… @martin_tintin came over to the basketball court as we’re about to wrap it up for the night.

We were all dying for a cigarette, so grabbed everything and off we went. We then went to one of those beef noodle place just around the corner. There were absolutely no customers at the one we went to even though we always thought that it was way better than the one next door. Anyways, the beef noodle was nice! Same as it has always been. After the meal, after another ciggy, we all went home.

Great fun! Seems like we’re going to be playing basketball every Wednesday night from now on… See how it goes… haha…
