Apple’s iPhone 4 Press Conference

It’s been a tough week for Apple Inc., under fire over its iPhone 4 antenna issue. It’s been heavily reported that when you hold the phone in a certain way, its reception would drop dramatically.

Apple has been trying to fix the issue with a software update, iOS 4.0.1 (available for update through iTunes already). But it seems like there are still questions to be answered. So just about an hour ago (starting at 10:00AM PT US time), Apple held a press conference regarding the iPhone 4.

At the very beginning, Apple showed this video clip from YouTube to the waiting press.

Steve Jobs took the stage to go through the following statistics before answering questions from the press. Here’s what he said.

  1. Apple says just 0.55% of iPhone owners have reported antenna problems
  2. Apple admits iPhone 4 drops more calls than iPhone 3GS
  3. Apple will give away free cases for every iPhone 4 through 30 September
  4. Apple says software fix for iPhone 4 proximity sensor is coming
  5. iPhone 4 will be available in 17 more countries on 30th July, omitting South Korea
  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Hong Kong
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

I’m not sure if the antenna issue will affect me when I get my iPhone 4, but the bumper looks nice and will protect its metal surrounding, so it might be a good idea to have one anyways.

I am quite happy with the press conference because I think that Apple has taken responsibility for the issue and are trying to resolve it. I don’t want to make any further judgement on the iPhone 4 before I get one, so… Hopefully, I can get one in the first batch of the Hong Kong delivery. More personal reviews then…

Apple has now posted the video of the press conference on their website.

aalis

Any close friends of mine would have noticed that I’ve been mentioning the name ‘aalis‘ quite a fair bit lately. ‘aalis‘, a womenswear label designed by Boysh Lam and Alice Tam, is now open to public at 2/F 31 Yiu Wa Street, Causeway Bay.

Being in the fashion industry for some years, Boysh has a collective experience from Paris and London. He’s worked with Titi Kwan, a very successful stylist/designer, while in Paris before returning to his home town, Hong Kong. Recently (August 2009 to be exact) establishing their new label ‘aalis’ with Alice, who graduated from Parsons School of Design, now known as the Parsons The New School For Design. Alice started working as an intern with Miss Sixty in New York and continued to work for them after moving back to Hong Kong before joining Club Monaco a while back before teaming up with Boysh.

‘aalis’ is the origin for Alice in French. Not only does it represent the name Alice, it also sounds like Alice and Boysh put together. When looking at the word ‘aalis’ (all in lower case), it also looks like an abstracted chandelier. The whole concept of ‘aalis’ is to bring the traditional and classic back to our modern daily life. Sounds complicated doesn’t it? Well, put it this way. Remember those Victorian gowns that ladies wore back in the 18th century? Elegant and classy, right? But no one wears them anymore. Simply because it’s too bulky and hard to wear. ‘aalis’ is taking a lot of those elements, like tweeds and laces, and putting them into their designs. The results are simply magnificent!

Our aim is to bring some freshness to our customers with aalis.

Our inspiration naturally transpired from beautiful old things, especially vintage hats and antique chandeliers. We’ve sourced traditional tweeds and lace patterns, reinterpreting them into modern shapes. We are constantly looking for new and interesting ways to combine various things we love and inject that into our designs. Even our logo was inspired by the smooth strokes of intricate, vintage chandeliers which reflects the core of our brand and clothes – vintage-inspired, romantic elements combined with contemporary styled, affordable but luxurious pieces.

Aussie Bistro Introduces iPad Menus

An Aussie Bistro in Sydney is now using Apple iPads as their menu. You can flick through their menu, as you do on a normal printed one, see images of how the dish would look like, hopefully. And, you could even place your order right from the iPad! Great work Aussies!

It’s definitely a very hi-tech gimmick! Check it out!

Cool huh?
