Michael Jackson RIP (1958-2009)

While I was still sound asleep in the morning, my brother came into my room and yelled, ‘Michael Jackson is dead!’. I couldn’t yet respond to him. Just tried my best to absorb the information, wake up a little and ‘oh my god~’. I immediately turned to my MacBook and switched to TweetDeck. There they are, links to possible Michael Jackson’s death. I was awake!

I remember growing up listening to all the great hits of Michael Jackson. I’ve always loved to watch his music videos.

What can I say? The King of Pop… You will ALWAYS be remembered Michael… RIP

1st Trailwalker Training – MacLehose Trail (Section 7)

A charity walk of 100km from Sai Kung to Tuen Mun, nonstop. This is the first understanding of the Trailwalker to me. This event was somehow brought up in our fortnightly meetings with our colleagues. I went to a discussion group later that week and decided to join this event with 3 other close colleagues. It sounds as though it’s impossible to complete but we’re all willing to give it a try!

We went for our first ever training on the Saturday 20 June and we’re scheduled to walk Section 7 of the MacLehose Trail. We got there a little late for breakfast but had a really quick bite anyhow. Because otherwise we might be out of energy during the walk.

As we got to the start

As we got to the start

It was a very sunny day and we were all fairly excited about the walk. The first thing we noticed is that our gear wasn’t that right to begin with. Our backpacks were too heavily loaded and that we might not have enough water. Anyhow, we were already there so let’s start!

Lets go!

Let's go!

I have never walked the MacLehose Trail ever before and was really excited about it so I brought my camera with me! Lucky I did! Was not expecting such beautiful landscape and views in Hong Kong!

That's me!

Up to this photo, we’re still pretty strong. Because it was only like 15 minutes of walk and it’s not even going uphill yet. But after taking this shot, we were in deep trouble! The uphill was so tough and there were moments were we’d rather be dead. We haven’t had these kind of training before and it’s been a while since we’ve exercised. After a long struggle, we finally managed to get to the mountain top! The views were magnificent!

After taking these photos, I put my camera down on the rocks and had a quick smoke hiding near the rocks. Suddenly a patrol jeep came by and I was worried about the smoking fine so we were kind of hiding and sneaking away at the same time. Meanwhile, my camera was still sitting on the rocks. And we started walking again. I’ve been taking photos of various signs along the way and we came up to this sign where I was hesitating whether I should take a picture of it or not. I didn’t bothered. It was such a long way down the hill and we were joyfully hopping our way down. After about 30 minutes of ‘hopping our way down’, we came to this check point where Section 7 ends and Section 8 starts. So I opened up my backpack and started looking for my camera. NOT THERE! THE CAMERA WAS NOT THERE!! HOLY SHIT!! I MUST HAVE LEFT IT ON THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN!! I did another thorough search and still no luck. Without hesitation, I started my way back up the steep mountain. I feel like I can die any minute as it was around 11:00 – 12:00 mid-day. The sun was not friendly at all. I soaked myself completed wet with a dripping towel beforehand and i was completely dried half way up. There were people coming from the opposite direction and I would ask if they saw a camera sitting around and have picked it up. No one saw it.

Gary, one of my teammates called me on my mobile as I took my last step up the mountain. I could barely talk but I managed to tell him that I’ll call back when I can talk. I was approaching the rocks where I’d left the camera. From a distance, I could see this black ‘thing’ on it. You cannot imagine how relieved I was when I picked up the camera in my hands again.

I’m so not going to leave anything around ever again! Especially on a walk like this! What a lesson to learn… T.T

I finally got back to where I left my teammates. It took me about an hour up and down again. Thank you so much for their support!

Starting point of Section 8

Starting point of Section 8

We’ve decided not to do Section 8 because it was our first training and it would be too hardcore for us beginners. So we headed towards the city (where we could take the mini-bus or taxi) which still takes another 2 hours to reach.

We got back into the city at around 15:00, found a restaurant, had a quick meal then I headed straight home to sleep. I got up around midnight and my teammates and friends asked me to go for a massage in Shenzhen. Of course I won’t say no! I was exhausted!!! Got changed then left home around 03:00. Spent the whole night at the massage place then had dinner with my family in Shenzhen the next day since it’s Father’s Day.

The 1st training was challenging enough already! Hope we’ll get better and walk longer each week.

iPhone 3.0

The first impression after updating to iPhone 3.0 is that it’s responsiveness, has gone bad. It was slow in response from hitting the Home button to wake the screen, changing language inputs, and even just flicking through the pages was a bit slow. That’s my first impression as it boots up the first time from iPhone 3.0.

Then it was time to really play around with it. There’s these new features like ‘Cut, Copy & Paste’, MMS and so on… These were all the featured updates, so I’m not going to go through them here. What I want to mention however, are these…

  1. MMS (Hong Kong 3 users)
  2. Visual Voicemail (Hong Kong 3 users)
  3. Tethering
  4. Pros
  5. Cons

1. MMS

As a 3 customer in Hong Kong, before the update, when you receive a MMS, you in fact receives a SMS with a link and password so that you can access the media on the Safari browser (or any other browser on the computer). On the day before iPhone 3.0 was released, 3 sent out SMS’s notifying their customers that the iPhone 3.0 will be released at 01:00 on 18 June (HKT) and that your account will have MMS activated latest by 26 June even if you don’t ask for it. If you would like to have the service activated earlier, you may open a link and do so there, which is exactly what I’ve done.

MMS Activated

MMS Activated

Then I received this confirmation the next day.

So that’s it, activated!

There weren’t any of my friends ready for it yet so I had to wait a few days before I can actually try it out. Now that it’s been a while, I’ve come to realize that the MMS services is totally not reliable! There will be times where ur MMS would be left in the messages unsent! You’ll only come back to it after a few hour finding that it’s still sitting there! Why can’t it try sending it till ts done or at least give you a warning or a popup? Anyway, the other problem with 3′s MMS service is that even though it’s shown that the message has been sent, it doesn’t actually mean that your message has been successfully delivered to the recipient! I was just trying to send a contact to my friend sitting right next to me while having a few drinks at the bar. We waited and waited bit it never got to her phone! I had to send it again through email where she got it almost instantly! Sigh… It was so embarrassing!

2. Visual Voicemail

Let’s talk about the Visual Voicemail now. With 3 Hong Kong, you actually have to pay a HKD$8 monthly fee to use this service. Well, I’ve got them to waive my first 12 months but why should we be paying more for services that should have been included a year ago? Annoying 3! Anyways, for some reasons, I find that some of my voicemail goes missing after a day or 2. Say, I used to have 5 voicemail, the next day I go back into Visual Voicemail, there would only be 1. I don’t know if this is the case with everyone else. Visual Voicemail is indeed a very good thing to have, but what good can it do if they go missing?

3. Tethering

For those of you who don’t know what ‘tethering’ is, here’s a simple definition. It’s using the iPhone’s data connection so that your computer can go online either via USB or Bluetooth. I only found out on the second day that you the setting for using tethering is already in the ‘Settings’ on the iPhone, thanks to @nefuis! The setup process was seamless! I was at my mum’s office the day I tried out tethering with my MacBook and it only took about 15 seconds for it to be setup! Amazing!

I know this sounds such a wanker, but I even tried using tethering while I was on the bus. The connection was very good apart from some of the dead spots where there’s no network coverage. The connection speed was very acceptable too!

4. Pros

It has already been a while since I’ve updated to iPhone 3.0 and there’s things I love about it and things I hate about it. Let’s talk about the Pros for now. While physically using the iPhone, you’ll find that there’s a lot of minor things that makes your life so much easier. Say for example, while you’re typing in the email addresses, it not only searches the address on your iPhone, it instantly searches the Global Address Book on the Microsoft Exchange Server! How handy! You’ll also notice while in Recent call list of the Phone application, it now shows you which number of the contact was incoming and outgoing! I used to have this trouble of calling back someone’s ‘Home’ number whereas I should be calling their ‘Mobile’. There’s also a new category named ‘iPhone’. :) And how good is it to finally have copy, cut & paste! It’s so helpful to finally be able to send multiple photos directly from the iPhone!

5. Cons

I’m sure a lot of iPhone 3.0 users are very happy with their update. But I seriously find that the iPhone is getting slower each day. I’m not just pointing my fingers at 3rd party apps. Even with Apple’s default apps! The one that’s really starting to piss me off is the message app. It’s now taking forever to launch! I’m sure most of us uses a fair bit of messaging these days. It’s just getting ridiculous! You might also notice a change in its predictive text. It’s not auto-capping after ‘!’ & ‘?’. I’m in a place where we have to change between languages fairly often, like Traditional Chinese and English, which are quite common in Hong Kong. When you’re switching between handwriting recognition, pinyin and English, it takes so long that you can actually have a sip of coffee, come back to the phone and it’s still not ready! Hope that this is simply a software problem that can be fixed in the next update and not a hardware issue where iPhone 3.0 is too much for the 2nd generation iPhone 3G to handle.

Trip to Zhangmutou, Guangzhou, China

My friends are coming over to China from Brisbane for their business trip. Haven’t caught up with Ken for 16 months, so I decided to go to China with him so that we could catch up.

Stephen arrived at Hong Kong International Airport around Tuesday midnight and decided to stay at the airport and wait for Ken’s arrival the next morning. I met up with them in Sheung Shui so that we could cross the border together.

As soon as we got there, we had a smoke and Ken burnt a hole into his mask and made this… Funny~!

We quickly went to catch the express train to Zhangmutou. I didn’t know where exactly we’re heading at the beginning, I only found out that we were heading this town when we were buying the ticket.

After arriving, met up with a new friend, their business partner, Sam and had lunch at a restaurant nearby the hotel we stayed in. The chicken pot was really nice! Then we went over to Sam’s factory to check out his new product. Kenny, Sam’s younger brother was already at the factory waiting for us. We stayed at the factory for the entire afternoon then went to have dinner with Sam and Kenny’s father. Then it’s time for a few drinks… This one was taken during supper after we finished drinking.

It was great to catch up with Ken and Stephen! Don’t know when they’re gonna come over again, it all depends on Stephen ability to boost up their business. Otherwise, I’ll meet them in Brisbane at the end of the year.

Anyways, it was really great to have caught up with them!

H1N1??

It’s a long weekend ahead, thanks to this Dragon Boat Festival. A huge soccer game was on Wednesday night and my younger brother invited some friends over to watch the game in the middle of the night. I got home fairly late that night and as I opened the door, the living room was already packed with the expectation of the game. My brother and his friends were already playing a soccer game on the PS2. After a quick shower, I sat down in the living room as the game was about to begin with my little work desk set up (because I wanted to finish a proposal that I’ll be presenting the next day).

Just before the game began, mum and dad came out to join the excitement, so as my uncle who lives just a few blocks away. The game begun and half my time at my little work desk was spent watching the game with everyone. While I was concentrating on work, the air-conditioner kept me unconsciencely cold. By the time I’m done with my proposal, I’ve realized that I’ve caught a cold. The game ended. Barcelona won 2-0 over Manchester United.

The following day, I went to meet up with a few friends for happy hour at TST. I already have flu symptoms and started coughing a bit, so I wore a mask on my way out for the first time in my life and kept 2 more in my backpack as spares. You must be thinking, ‘You would have worn a mask during the SARS outbreak, liar!’ But the fact is, I wasn’t in Hong Kong during SARS. It was quite an experience, because you can tell from people’s look on their face, they don’t want you near them. There’s this old woman sitting across the walkway on the bus, as soon as there’s an empty seat somewhere else, she moved.

Anyways, on Friday (I was supposed to be in a training room), my sickness has still not improved and I was getting a bit scared that I might be infected by the H1N1 virus. So first thing in the morning, I went to see a doctor. Luckily, he said I’m not infected by H1N1, just a normal flu. He gave me some prescription medicine and as soon as I got out of the clinic, I took them and went to the training room. The medication was so strong that as soon as I sat down in the training room, I fell asleep.

Me wearing mask

Me wearing mask

I spent the rest of the weekend in bed. Didn’t even bother waking up to do anything. The only time I got out of bed was to take my medication or eat, then straight back in bed. I’ve finally decided to get myself out of bed on Sunday late afternoon and I went out to have dinner with a friend.

There’s still some morning/night coughs but I’m sure I’ll be fine soon.
