Heard about ‘The Best Job in the World’ lately and got curious so went on Google and searched for it. There it is, Island Caretaker for Tourism Queensland. Its job description includes ‘Explore and report back’, ‘Feed the fish’, ‘Clean the pool’ and ‘Collect the mail’.
- Explore and report back – There’s so much to see and do, so you’ll have plenty to write about in your weekly blog. And with so much life above and below the water, you’re sure to capture some entertaining moments for your video diary and photo gallery. To keep you busy, Tourism Queensland will organise a schedule of travel and events on the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Your schedule could include sampling a new luxury spa treatment at qualia on Hamilton Island, trying out new snorkelling gear on Heron Island, or bushwalking on Hinchinbrook Island.
- Feed the fish – There are over 1,500 species of fish living in the Great Barrier Reef. Don’t worry – you won’t need to feed them all.
- Clean the pool – The pool has an automatic filter, but if you happen to see a stray leaf floating on the surface it’s a great excuse to dive in and enjoy a few laps.
- Collect the mail – You’ll have some time on your hands, so why not join the aerial postal service for a day? It’s a great opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of the reef and islands.
It’s a 6 months contract and Tourism Queensland is offering a AUD 150,000 package for the successful candidate. There wasn’t much time left till the application deadline, so I quickly grabbed my camera and started shooting video clips here and there. Recorded the opening and ending of what I have in mind, went home then started editing.
It’s the first time I’ve ever took my camera and shot video of myself. It was kind of embarrassing at the beginning but after a few shots, I’m starting to be okay.
The whole editing took around 5 hours or so, it was really fun! As soon as I started uploading it to the official website. It was really slow and the first time the page refreshed was almost an hour after initiating the upload. A shocking result showed up! It says that the application has closed! What?? I was so shocked! Anyways, I kept trying and trying. After almost 10 times, my body couldn’t take it anymore and I fell asleep. It was almost 6 in the morning.
Woke up to see a new page of my computer screen. THANK YOU – Thank you for your application. Wow! Made it!

My Application
Waited till evening Monday 23 February 2009 while I was still in the office and received the confirmation email from Tourism Queensland. So quickly, I forwarded the link of the video to almost everyone I know.
Now, all there’s left is to wait till the first 50 shortlisted applicants are announced in 6 more days.
If you’d like to support my application, please click here and give me a 5 star rating afterwards. Thanks for your support!
