The Best Job in the World

Heard about ‘The Best Job in the World’ lately and got curious so went on Google and searched for it. There it is, Island Caretaker for Tourism Queensland. Its job description includes ‘Explore and report back’, ‘Feed the fish’, ‘Clean the pool’ and ‘Collect the mail’.

  • Explore and report back – There’s so much to see and do, so you’ll have plenty to write about in your weekly blog. And with so much life above and below the water, you’re sure to capture some entertaining moments for your video diary and photo gallery. To keep you busy, Tourism Queensland will organise a schedule of travel and events on the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Your schedule could include sampling a new luxury spa treatment at qualia on Hamilton Island, trying out new snorkelling gear on Heron Island, or bushwalking on Hinchinbrook Island.
  • Feed the fish – There are over 1,500 species of fish living in the Great Barrier Reef. Don’t worry – you won’t need to feed them all.
  • Clean the pool – The pool has an automatic filter, but if you happen to see a stray leaf floating on the surface it’s a great excuse to dive in and enjoy a few laps.
  • Collect the mail – You’ll have some time on your hands, so why not join the aerial postal service for a day? It’s a great opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of the reef and islands.

It’s a 6 months contract and Tourism Queensland is offering a AUD 150,000 package for the successful candidate. There wasn’t much time left till the application deadline, so I quickly grabbed my camera and started shooting video clips here and there. Recorded the opening and ending of what I have in mind, went home then started editing.

It’s the first time I’ve ever took my camera and shot video of myself. It was kind of embarrassing at the beginning but after a few shots, I’m starting to be okay.

The whole editing took around 5 hours or so, it was really fun! As soon as I started uploading it to the official website. It was really slow and the first time the page refreshed was almost an hour after initiating the upload. A shocking result showed up! It says that the application has closed! What?? I was so shocked! Anyways, I kept trying and trying. After almost 10 times, my body couldn’t take it anymore and I fell asleep. It was almost 6 in the morning.

Woke up to see a new page of my computer screen. THANK YOU – Thank you for your application. Wow! Made it!

My Application

My Application

Waited till evening Monday 23 February 2009 while I was still in the office and received the confirmation email from Tourism Queensland. So quickly, I forwarded the link of the video to almost everyone I know.

Now, all there’s left is to wait till the first 50 shortlisted applicants are announced in 6 more days.

If you’d like to support my application, please click here and give me a 5 star rating afterwards. Thanks for your support!

Made me think back…

I was reading my Twitter Buddy’s blog just a few hours ago. Was really touched by her latest post and made me think back…

My first ever tweet (Twitter post) was from my MacBook on 25 July 2008 at 05:44 after I’ve installed Twitterrifc on my iPhone 3G and I needed an account to start using the app. So knowing nothing at all about Twitter, I signed up, and posted my first tweet.

I’m playing with my new iPhone 3G…!!!

Back then, I wasn’t following anyone and no one was following me. So there’s really no point in posting anything. One day, went out with @martin_tintin and found out that he’s been using Twitter and later on, found out @nefuis was also on Twitter. So we each followed one another and I started twitting again. That was back around late August 2008. Later on, @martin_tintin asked me and @nefuis to play an online game, Kingdom Game. We were so into the game back then. So the 3 of us started twitting more and more often.

One day, when I was catching up with @nefuis, he asked, ‘Who’s that girl that’s following me on Twitter now?’

I had no idea what he was talking about so he explained, ‘She has been following you! I found her on your followers page!’ I went, ‘YEAH? How come I never knew???’

Anyways, to date, we still don’t know who she started following first. At night after we both went home, I looked up my Twitter home page and checked my followers. There she is! Cuddling her cute little cat! So I decided to follow her back… I then started reading about what she’s doing, thinking and feeling. Every now and then, issues with her ex would come up and she seemed to be in a not-so-good position. Kept reading and reading, at the same time kept posting and posting.

Oct 13 was her first reply to me on Twitter and I only got to see it on my way to work on Oct 14. From then on, we found out that we were going to be running in the same 10km run at Standard Chartered Marathon. Then it’s Christmas, New Year’s, reading each others’ blog, my birthday, Chinese New Year, her birthday… then Feb 8, finally bumping into each other on the Island Eastern Corridor just before our 10km run starts.

For the past 5 months, I’ve come to notice that my dear Twitter Buddy is a caring, loving, funny, straight forward, sporty, strong and outgoing person that loves cats, music, her iPhone 3G, partying with friends and traveling! Although we don’t really know each other, but her existence has definitely been making differences to other people.

After reading her blog, I truly believes that she deserves everything she has now and I’m sure she’s having a much better, happier and meaningful life than compared to late 2008! And I’m sure it will only get better each day!

Dedicated to my dear Twitter Buddy! You’re unique and gifted so don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. Happy Valentine’s Day TB!

Mr Yeung’s Birthday Dinner

Received a phone call from my mate PY asking whether I’m free on Thursday night for dinner. I went, ‘Sure! But is there any particular occasion?’ ‘Yep, it’s my dad’s birthday!’

Wow! Didn’t expect an invitation to Mr Yeung’s birthday dinner. What an honor!

Dinner was scheduled at 19:00 on Thursday night. I got off work a bit too early, so I went directly to the salon to get a haircut. By the time I finished my haircut, I was running a bit late. Got over to the Pacific Club just next to the Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui 10 minutes past.

At the balcony as I arrived

At the balcony as I arrived

Netta (PY’s sister) and I both brought our cameras and were just pointing our cameras around. Shooting at attendees of the dinner and to the night view of the Hong Kong Island. Dinner was fantastic! Halfway through dinner, Ryan, PY and Netta’s cousin arrived. He was talking to his parents about what he wants to do as major when he goes to university in another year’s time. He expressed that he wants to major in Literature & Psychology. Of course, some of us chipped in our feedback.

So, here’s the thing. It really didn’t matter what our feedback/comments were. What would your feedback/comments be? Did you happen to go into university at your late teens or early twenties, picked a major that you think was the right choice? Have you ever thought to yourself, what I did back at university really helped me in my everyday life? Have you ever regretted that you should have did a major of what your interests were instead of what was right?

Well, if you’re an architect, lawyer, doctor, accountant or any other professionals. I would say your answers are going to be yes. But what if you did a university course just for the sack of getting a degree? Just so it’s easier for you to find a job in Hong Kong? Have you ever wanted to do something that you’re so passionate about but was worried that you won’t get a proper job after all?

I remember when I was a little kid, mum used to take me to piano lessons, drawing lessons, sketching lessons & painting lessons. I even at one stage did Chinese caligraphy. But when I told them that I’m doing Industrial Design at university, mum and dad reckons that I’m wasting my time, it’s not practical, you’re not going to find a job, blah blah blah… But I really enjoyed it… Enjoyed every moment of it! Even though I had to drop out at the end.

Everyone at dinner

Everyone at dinner

After dinner, we all went back to the Hong Kong Island. PY, Georgia, Armand and I went over to Deluxe for a quick drink. I was getting too tired and couldn’t stand it anymore when my 1 hour trip home keeps popping up my head. So I took off.

A night of basketball

It’s been a while since I’ve played basketball with my mates! A mate of mine rang in the afternoon and ask if I’m interested. To be honest, since my injury from playing basketball the last time (probably 4 months back), I was a bit hesitated. But anyways, why not? It’d just be like a bunch of mates hanging out with a bit of sports! Yay!

Lucky I’ve got my gym gear with me, only thing missing is a pair of socks. So immediately after work, hopped into the Nike shop at Times Square and bought a pair. I was supposed to be there at Victoria Park at 20:00 but got there at 21:00. Made it there as quickly as I could.

I kept thinking to myself throughout the games that I have to be careful not to hurt my back again. So I was limiting my activeness all the way. Felt kind of bad because most of the points lost were from me. Oops… @martin_tintin came over to the basketball court as we’re about to wrap it up for the night.

As we were leaving the court

We were all dying for a cigarette, so grabbed everything and off we went. We then went to one of those beef noodle place just around the corner. There were absolutely no customers at the one we went to even though we always thought that it was way better than the one next door. Anyways, the beef noodle was nice! Same as it has always been. After the meal, after another ciggy, we all went home.

Great fun! Seems like we’re going to be playing basketball every Wednesday night from now on… See how it goes… haha…

Hate the traffic!!!

Don’t you just hate the traffic around 17:30-19:30 when you want to get from Sheung Wan to Causeway Bay? It’s ridiculous!!! My bus arrived at Sheung Wan at about 18:05 and it’s already 18:46 now. Still haven’t reached Admiralty!!! Damn!!! Really should’ve jumped off the bus at Sheung Wan and changed to the MTR!!!
